Community Programs & Services: Spiritual Care

What is Spiritual Care?

In times of significant illness, change or loss, many people require more than just physical care to help them cope with what can be considered a spiritual crisis, as well as physical one.

At these times, spiritual care, an important part of holistic care, emphasizes spirituality as a way to help people on their journey towards healing.

Spiritual care helps people by focusing on their needs and priorities, as well as those of their family members and healthcare providers.

Spiritual care providers (or chaplains) enable individuals to express their beliefs, values and emotions in a private setting where there is respect for the culture, dignity, beliefs and practices of the client and their family.

This work is done from a multi-faith, spiritual perspective to overcome crisis while keeping the feelings of hope, vision and purpose strong in their lives.

Role of Spiritual Care Provider

As part of the healthcare team a professional spiritual care provider, who is accountable to his/her own faith group, works in an interfaith capacity with people from all faith traditions, as well as those who do not belong to any faith tradition.

They work with family members, friends, volunteers, religious leaders and members of a patient’s faith community to give spiritual care. They listen to concerns and provide support and encouragement for clients and families in a confidential and caring setting.

Spirituality is an awareness of purpose and the search to understand the meaning of life and creation.

Spiritual care providers offer:

  • Support
  • Comfort
  • Grief and loss care
  • Referral to resources, both internal (healthcare providers) and external (support communities, spiritual caregivers from specific faith traditions
  • Help with difficult ethical and moral decisions and dilemmas
  • Prayer, meditation and blessings
