Building Skills for Participating in the Adult World

May 21 – 23, 2008

Bloorview Kids Rehab and the Transitions Conference Steering Committee are busy preparing for the forth bi-annual conference on the subject of Transitioning from childhood to adulthood.  The theme for the 2008 conference is “Participation.”

According to the World Health Organization (WHO, 1997), Participation is “the nature and extent of a person’s involvement in life situations.”

It includes the activities of daily living, education, relationships, sexuality, life skill development, employment, accessing medical services, recreational opportunities and community experiences.

Who is it for?

The Transitions Conference Steering Committee invites, health care professionals, community service providers, educators, researchers, caregivers, families and youth to participate.

What will be offered?

Pre-Conference Day:

Bloorview Kids Rehab will be hosting its second Pre-Conference Workshop.  The day will consist of two half-day workshops followed by a Wine and Cheese and an opportunity to explore our state-of-the-art facility.  The two workshops are;

  • Instructional Workshop: A Lifespan Approach to Growing Up
  • Informational Workshop: Transition Research and Evaluation


There are 51 presentations scheduled into the conference from leaders in the field of Transition and Participation.  Speakers from across Canada, USA, Sweden, Australia and the Netherlands will share their latest information about transition as it relates to the following streams;

  • Adult Living
  • Health Care
  • Recreation and Socialization

Wednesday, May 21, 2008:
Pre-Conference at  Bloorview Kids Rehab

Thursday, May 22 and Friday, May 23, 2008:
Conference at the Sheraton Centre Toronto Hotel
