Position: Safety Specialist

Key Responsibilities:
- Evaluates, recommends and implements all aspects of the Safety Program
- Applies a working knowledge of various legislation and regulations in the establishment and administering of Safety Programs.
- Liaises with outside safety organizations, government agencies, and other hospitals (eg. OHA, Ministry of Labour) regarding occupational health and safety issues.
- Advises on and monitors the safe use, delivery, storage and disposal of chemical, physical, and biological agents in all areas of the organization
- Consults with users, and management about provisions for adequate ventilation, containment and safety equipment
- Responds to specific staff concerns regarding workplace health and safety.
- Advises management regarding safety in their areas
- Plays and key role in contingency (Emergency Measures Plans) policy development, review and education
- Investigates all occupational accidents and exposures to chemical, physical and biological hazards.
- Contributes to the ongoing review of the Occupational Health and Safety Manual
- Prepares, conducts and/or co-ordinates the provision of staff safety education
- Compiles statistics and prepares reports on occupational health and safety matters and trends
- Participates, as required, on hospital committees as a consultant/advisor re: Occupational Health and Safety.
- Plays a key role as consultant and facilitator to the Joint Occupational Health and Safety Committee. including providing on going training for the committee
- Follows up and advises management regarding safety issues identified through the inspection process
- Plays a key role in our WSIB claims management process
Qualifications:
- Previous related experience as a specialist in health and safety
- Excellent knowledge of safety related legislation and best practices
- Good knowledge of WSIB and rating systems
Professional Registration Required
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Intermediate level experience in computer applications, i.e. word, excel, powerpoint
