The
atmosphere of a retreat within the city. For the child transferred
here from an acute-care hospital, we wanted
to create a restful, welcoming atmosphere that connects
the building with the surrounding ravine, has lots of natural
light
and is made up of a series of places that have character
and personality. |

Our vision of creating
a setting where kids with disabilities can learn to find their
rightful, equal, and fulfilling place in the
world has become a reality. We have completed the finishing
touches on our remarkable state-of-the-art facility, which
supports our work in the areas of
care, research, education and advocacy for children and youth
with disabilities and complex continuing care needs. Our new
facility:
- incorporates and exceeds the standards for accessible
design and construction
- integrates our passion for energy efficiency,
green design and respect for the
environment
- provides a safe, secure, accessible and supportive
environment for our clients and
families
- maximizes the connection to the outdoors, and
our unique location overlooking a
ravine
- fosters imagination
With
the final move of our inpatient site in November 2006,
we have accomplished our final step of integrating our
programming and services under one roof.
In March 2000, the Ministry
of Health and Long-term Care (MOHLTC) approved the Functional
Program for the then Bloorview MacMillan Children’s
Centre. Two months later, the MOHLTC announced the first
commitment of capital funding for the new building project.
Following the submission
of cost estimates and pre-tender drawings, in late summer
2003, Bloorview received additional capital funding, and
approval to proceed to tender
on the redevelopment project.
Since January 2004, the construction of the new facility at 150
Kilgour Road (Bayview and Eglinton) in Toronto has been underway.
We are nearing completion and will be fully integrated in October
2006.
Bloorview
Kids Rehab is located at 150 Kilgour Road (Bayview and Eglinton)
in Toronto. Our home is
a compact six floor, 353,000 square foot children’s rehab
facility. The building sets the standard for universal accessibility.
Not only does the design far surpass the requirements of
the Ontario Building Code, many of its features exceed those
of
the Americans with Disabilities Act. The design incorporates
such things as oversized elevators with two-sided access,
wide hallways, appropriate floor finishes, textures, colours
and
lighting. Drawing on the natural beauty and restorative nature
of the neighbouring ravine, this is a place where children
can explore, interact, and learn in an exhilarating environment.
This is a place that recognizes the wholeness and promise
of
every child.
The new $101-million facility will bring together state-of-the-art
technology with an imagination-inspiring design. For the first
time, all the programs and services will come under one roof: the
Bloorview Research Institute, the Bloorview School Authority, a
24-hour hospital service that includes family accommodation suites,
and a creative and therapeutic arts program.

The total project costs
of the new facility is $101 million. The Ontario government,
with support from the Ontario SuperBuild Corporation,
contributed $56.7 million. The remaining costs for the building
came from the sale of the Bloorview site, and the hospital’s
most ambitious fundraising campaign ever.
