About Bloorview

Facility: Official Opening of Bloorview’s Inpatient Services & Accommodation Suites

Your child has just had life-changing surgery, leaving her unable to speak or even sit up on her own. This is the story of Amanda McQuinn and her mother Joanne. Diagnosed with a golf ball-size tumour in 2005, Amanda underwent emergency surgery to remove it. However, she suffered a stroke during the procedure and was left immobile and non-verbal. Amanda and her mother spent six months at Bloorview. “Bloorview saved Amanda’s body,” said Joanne in her speech at the opening ceremonies.
On May 31st, 2007, Bloorview Kids Rehab officially opened the 3rd Floor Inpatient Services and 5th Floor Accommodation Suites. “Opening this new facility, and the new inpatient floor is another significant step in improving the lives of our clients who receive inpatient services at Bloorview,” said Sheila Jarvis, President & CEO of Bloorview Kids Rehab.
Brooke Alexander is one of those clients. Brooke was diagnosed with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome; an illness that left her nauseous, unbelievably fatigued and unable to carry a conversation. She attended Bloorview’s Chronic Pain/Fatigue program where she learned to take control of her illness.
Both Brooke and Amanda attended the opening ceremonies along with guest of honour, the Honourable Kathleen Wynne, MPP Don Valley West and Minister of Education, who represented the Ontario Government. Ms. Wynne delivered an inspiring speech that illustrated her support, passion and respect for the work done at Bloorview. She also shared Premier Dalton McGuinty’s congratulatory remarks, applauding Bloorview on the steps it is taking to become a true leader in childhood rehabilitation.
Participating in the official ribbon cutting was Sheila Jarvis, John Wedge, O.C., Chair of Bloorview’s Board of Trustees, Valerie McMurty, President and CEO for Bloorview Kids Foundation, and special guest, Victor Dodig, Executive Vice-President of Retail Distribution and Wealth Management for CIBC World Markets. The ceremony took place on the 3rd floor terrace with a view into the Therapeutic Playroom, which was funded by CIBC World Markets Children’s Foundation. Victor Dodig and John Wedge unveiled the plaque that recognizes CIBC’s continuous support and dedication to the hospital, which will be hung just outside the Therapeutic Playroom.
For Amanda and Brooke, their families, staff, supporters and our guests of honour the Opening Ceremonies marked another landmark of achievement for Bloorview Kids Rehab.
